Motorway Driving After Passing Your UK Test

Just passed your UK driving test? Here's everything new drivers must know before tackling motorways — from lane discipline to smart motorways.

Passing your driving test is a huge milestone — but it's also just the beginning. For many new drivers, the first solo motorway trip can feel daunting. Unlike the roads covered during your lessons, motorways bring higher speeds, more complex lane management, and unique hazards. Here's what you need to know before you join that slip road for the first time.

Motorways Were Off-Limits as a Learner — So What Changed?

Since 2018, learner drivers in the UK have been allowed on motorways, but only with an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a car fitted with dual controls. In reality, many learners never got that experience — especially given ongoing driving test backlogs that have left thousands of people rushing through training just to secure a test slot. That means a large number of newly passed drivers hit motorways with little to no prior exposure.

If that sounds like you, don't panic. Motorway driving follows clear rules, and once you understand them, confidence comes quickly.

Key Motorway Rules Every New Driver Must Know

1. Keep Left Unless Overtaking

The left-hand lane is the default driving lane on a motorway. The middle and right lanes are for overtaking only — once you've passed the vehicle ahead, move back to the left. Hogging the middle lane is not only bad practice; it's illegal and can result in a fine.

2. Match Your Speed to the Flow of Traffic

The national speed limit on UK motorways is 70 mph. You don't have to drive at 70 mph, but driving unnecessarily slowly can be just as dangerous as speeding. Aim to travel at a speed that's safe, legal, and consistent with the traffic around you.

3. Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Use the two-second rule as a minimum in dry conditions — leave at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle ahead. In wet or poor visibility conditions, double it. At 70 mph, vehicles are covering over 30 metres every second, so stopping distances are enormous.

4. Understand Smart Motorways

Many UK motorways are now smart motorways, where the hard shoulder may be used as a running lane. Look for overhead gantry signs showing speed limits, lane closures (a red X means that lane is closed), and any hazard warnings. Never ignore a red X — it's a legal requirement to comply.

5. Joining and Leaving the Motorway

Use the slip road to build up speed before merging — you should be approaching motorway speed by the time you reach the main carriageway. Signal early, check your mirrors and blind spots, and merge smoothly into a safe gap in the left lane. When leaving, signal in good time and use the slip road to reduce your speed, not the motorway itself.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Build Confidence Before You Go Solo

The best way to feel prepared is to practise the routes and scenarios you'll actually face. SteerClear — the UK app for practising real DVSA test centre routes with live AI scoring — can help you sharpen your hazard perception and road awareness before stepping onto a motorway alone.

Consider booking a Pass Plus course too. Delivered by an ADI, it includes at least one module of motorway driving and can even reduce your insurance premium.

The Bottom Line

Motorways are statistically among the safest roads in the UK per mile travelled — because they're designed for speed and have strict rules. Respect those rules, stay alert, and give yourself time to build experience gradually. Start with a quieter motorway at an off-peak time, and consider taking a more experienced driver with you for your first few trips.

You've already proven you can drive — now it's about growing into a confident, capable driver for life. Use every tool available to you, including SteerClear, to make that journey as smooth as possible.
